- Exchange Traded Fridays - Issue 10 - 24th September 2021
Welcome to Issue 10 of Exchange Traded Fridays for the week ending 24th September 2021 and its another week of releases This week in local news we saw the announcement of a couple of new ETFs as well as the weekly performance insights from ETF Securities. Globally, there was more on having a good ticker code, the pace of the ETF revolution and a piece on active fixed income. What's in this newsletter? Local ETF Articles Global ETF Articles ETF Videos ETF Podcasts Tweet of the week - Shares for Beginners Chart of the week - Visual Capitalist ETF Education - VanEck ETFtracker App Updates ETFtracker Forum Listen or Watch Articles - Local Money Management – Loomis Sayles launches active ETF – New launch with the global equity fund of Loomis Sayles. Per the article “the ticker will be LSGE and will list on the ASX. The $144 million Loomis Sayles Global Equity fund had returned 28.8% over one year to 31 August, according to FE Analytics, versus returns of 30.4% by the global equity sector within the Australian Core Strategies universe.” DAINTREE HYBRID OPPORTUNITIES FUND (MANAGED FUND) (ASX: DHOF) - Details about a new fund from Daintree, their hybrid opportunities fund which will be distributed as part of Daintree as well as eInvest who already have a series of active ETFs. ETF Securities - Weekly Monitor - w/e 17th September - per the report "Markets retreated last week on the back of fears from China’s Evergrande Group and free fall in iron ore prices. This caused an increased demand for the US Dollar and it strengthened against the G8. The best performers for the week were BetaShares Crude Oil Index ETF - Ccy Hedged (OOO) up 3.4% and BetaShares Strong US Dollar Hedge Fund (YANK) up 2.7%.". Below is the Trading Volume per the report. Articles - Global Bloomberg - BROS, BETZ and DNA: The Race to Claim a Good Ticker and Attract Investors - In light of another article on ticker names we mentioned a few weeks ago (see Hunt for Hottest Tickers Creates a New Gray Market on Wall Street) we wanted to highlight this one which also look at memorable tickers, in this case for equities not just ETFs. This article goes through ticker philosophy and the importance of picking a good ticker and things to watch out for. The National News - Is the ETF revolution coming to an end? Article from the US looking at whether ETFs are too much of a good thing? This article poses that question as to whether ETFs have gone too far especially as there’s been low interest rates and government stimulus. As per the article “Another concern is that ETFs may have contributed to madcap market growth by throwing investor funds at the market’s big winners, especially big US tech companies.” They also talk about issues in throwing money at passive index tracking investments leading to inefficiency “That’s because most ETFs pick stocks purely on market cap. They do not reward superior profitability, return on equity or capital efficiency”. More questions in the article. Nasdaq - Investors Keep Turning to Active Fixed Income ETFs – Interesting as we had an active fixed income ETF specialist on our Interviews with Experts show this week (see here). As per this US focused article, “Actively managed fixed income U.S. listed ETFs have gathered a 17% share of category net inflows thus far in 2021, despite active ETFs overall managing just 4% of industry assets.” It also shows more details with charts tracking active ETF growth and the effect on bond ETFs. Videos First up are a couple of videos in our ETF Analysis series on YouTube as well as Instagram (@ETFtracker) and Twitter (@ETFtrackerAU) . These show how we use our apps to do some quickfire analysis on various topics like Using ETF Snapshots to look at VDHG Which ETFs is KGN in? Searching for Evergrande Exposure in Australian ETFs ausbiz - 21st September - Three minutes, one great investable idea - The rise of cyber crime has been detailed in a report by the Federal Cybersecurity Centre. Blair Modica from BetaShares talks about how investors can play into that theme via ETFs (they have HACK) and how cybersecurity is a growing industry expected to get to $250 billion by the end of the year too so the opportunity is there. 3mins ausbiz – 20th September - eInvest's newest and greatest ESG-friendly idea - in this episode Emilie O’Neill of eInvest shares with us some tips on identifying the next great ESG-friendly superstar for your portfolio. Today, she's nominated Calix (CXL). 5mins ausbiz - 17th September - The turning point for sustainability ETFs - per ausbiz "2020 was the turning point for ESG and green ETFs, according to James Kingston from iShares. James says there are now $120b in green-friendly exchange traded funds worldwide - a sign the trend is not just a mini blip." 5mins ausbiz - 16th September - 3 ETF's to take advantage of a surge in Japanese equities - Per ausbiz "Andrew Wielandt from DP Wealth Advisory joins ausbiz to discuss the recent rise in Japanese equity markets. Japanese equities were steady for the last 12 months (up 13%) vs US (up 35%) but they have been on a tear over the past two weeks, says Andrew." 6mins The Compound - There's too much money and it's ruining everything | What Are Your Thoughts? - In this episode between Mike and Josh, they go through Evergrande, the SPAC asset class looking like its done and a bit at the end that can relate to ETF investors too when they talk about stocks vs passive funds. 49mins "The Market Will Never Go Down Again" | The Compound and Friends #15 - In this episode they bring in Haley Sacks and Dan Nathan and chat about how much steam has been behind this bull market and whether we’ve seen this kind of thing before (we have). Definitely some bearish sentiment here. Additionally, they talk about Robinhood in choice between that stock and Uber and what each panellist prefers. An interesting quip from this part of the show is the thought that Robinhood has done more for sports betting than we could have imagined because when sports betting first went away and all these customers got into trading for the first time, the Draft Kings type apps all had to step up and provide even more services to a customer base now expecting in-game options to trade on and more. 36mins Podcasts Morningstar Investing Compass - A deep dive into ETFs (Part II) - 2nd part of the ETF series from Shani and Mark looking at what drives performance in this asset class. Check out part 1 on their podcast as well. ETF Edge - Navigating the Global Slowdown - per the show notes "CNBC's Bob Pisani spoke with Arne Noack, Head of Systematic Investment Solutions at DWS Group and Dan Wiener, Chairman of Adviser Investment and editor of The Independent Adviser for Vanguard Investors." They discussed the factors fuelling the sharp moves lower and they also discuss Evergrande. 24mins The ETFtracker Show - Interviews with Experts - Episode 6 - The Fixed Income Specialist - This week we spoke with Matthew Holberton of Fidante and learned more about fixed income ETFs and how they fit into ETF portfolios. Fun fact, they're not as well traded as equity ETFs but the bond market is far bigger than the equity markets. 34mins Tweet of the week This week we highlight the Shares for Beginners show and host Phil Muscatello who had founder of Superhero, John Winters on board for the latest episode. See the link in the podcast section above but follow Phil on Twitter for more of his posts. https://twitter.com/phil_muscatello/status/1440531591097294849 Chart(s) of the Week This weeks chart of the week is actually an infographic created by Visual Capitalist. - Getting Started with ETFs - Part 2
This is the 2nd part of the wider Getting Started with ETFs series. You can jump ahead to other parts below or scroll further to learn more about the types of ETFs out there. Part 1 - What to read, watch or listen to to get started Part 2 - What kind of ETFs are there? (this article) Part 3 - What data we look at when analysing ETFs Part 4 - Examples of ETF analysis Part 5 - Where to trade ETFs Part 6 - Our favourite podcasts and shows What kind of ETFs are there? Now that you’ve done some homework on your investing type, the next step is to choose what ETFs might be suitable for you? In Australia there are a few key types of ETFs available, Equity, Fixed Income, Commodities, Property, and Cash/Currency. Equity ETFs are split into regions (Australian, Asian, Emerging Markets and Global), other groups have an Australian domestic versus global type split. The ASX and Chi-X split these categories out in their report and we use them in some of our data visualisations. Figure 1 - Eftracker latest returns for 2021 by ETF Category Additionally, we've pulled together some of these ETFs into related categories you can use to compare daily prices via Google Finance. Check out the link in the resources section at the end of this article. Figure 3 - Example from ETFtracker's Google Finance resource page If you’re a risk averse investor or closer to retirement, fixed income/bond ETFs should be looked at because on the investing risk scale, they hold lower risk assets (corporate and government bonds) but at the same time, have limited upside price potential. Apart from the ETF categories available, there are passive and active ETFs with the former being more common. Passive means ETFs which track a particular index. Active are ETFs which have more active management behind them. There are pros and cons to both but there is room for both to be in a portfolio given the benefits they provide. Passive is safer as it tracks the indices it follows and whilst active has underperformed, it’s built to not just track an index but also outperform it. Figure 2 - Investopedia page on Active vs Passive ETFs Another area to look at is the thematic of the ETFs you are looking to get exposure to. If your answers to last weeks question on what you want exposure too said something like technology or ESG or healthcare then this means you are looking tot be involved in a particular type of ETF. These ETFs which follow a theme are different to broad-based ETFs which usually track a region like Australia (e.g. VAS, IOZ). Whilst they’re categories as well, property and commodity ETFs can also be considered answers to the question of what you want exposure to so these are things to consider. Deploying a strategy to bring these together is also important and often, a core-satellite strategy is mentioned by advisors. This type of strategy often sees a broad-based regional type ETF or set of ETFs chosen as the core part of the strategy (e.g. IOZ or VAS for Aussie exposure and NDQ or STW for global) and then satellites being in the realm of ETFs you might have particular interest in like a technology play (ROBO or ATEC) and ESG (ETHI or IMPQ) or you want exposure to fixed income ETFs (like XARO or ECAS) and more. After choosing whatever ETFs fit into your strategy, your risk tolerance, how much time you want to hold the ETFs and other factors will affect how much weighting you put to each. A lower risk approach sees the core as having a higher weighting compared to the satellites and as the risk profile changes so does the weighting between the pair. It’s up to you or your financial adviser to help choose what works best. You can read more on core-satellite strategies below. - Exchange Traded Fridays - Issue 9 - 17th September 2021
Welcome to Issue 9 of Exchange Traded Fridays for the week ending 17th September 2021 and its another week of releases at ETFtracker. We updated the holdings analysis page with a new app that enables users to compare ETFs across ETF issuers. We only cover 6 issuers but that makes up 170 of the 240 ETFs. More on that below. This week in local news we provided a new updated holdings analysis tool to the market to help investors look under the hood, some details on ATO and tax implications with ETFs and details on advisers getting their clients into ETFs. Globally, it was further record for fund flows and more updates on bitcoin ETFs. Here's a summary of what else is in this newsletter. What's in this newsletter? Articles - Local Articles - Global Videos Podcasts Tweet of the week Chart of the week ETF Education ETFtracker App Updates ETFtracker Forum Listen or Watch Articles - Local ETF Holdings Comparison Tool - In this article we highlight the new ETF holdings tool that's available as part of the ETFtracker offering. It shows how the tool works and what the coverage is limited to but its great if you're an investor who wants to compare ETFs to check for holdings overlap or you're interested in seeing which ETFs hold a certain stock you're interested in. Accountants Daily - ATO issues warning on shares, ETF tax consequences - not often we'd include an accounting or ATO article but this deep dives into something the ATO will be looking for from young investors who trade ETFs - those who try to offset capital losses against income. Hopefully no one's been doing that here but certainly worth a read to be mindful of this. Independent Financial Adviser - Advisers flock to ETFs for reduced costs - In this article, VanEcks Smart Beta survey is quoted show responses from 547 in the advice sector and its seen that 91% of advisers use ETFs in their client portfolios (up from an already high 87% in 2020). This and other statistics in the article. VanEck - The next big thing is never what you expect - A look into innovation and how it's hardly ever been as expected in the past and why we should not be surprised by this. From Blockbuster to Netflix and other disruptions this article goes through how VanEck has seen this play out and 2 ETFs you can get into to play this (QUAL, MVA). ETF Securities - Weekly ETF Monitor week ending 10th September - Markets fell from all time highs last week. Chinese equities fared well compared to a few months prior. Some of the best performers over the week were VanEck Vectors ChinaAMC A-Share ETF (CETF), which was up 3.8%, and VanEck Vectors China New Economy ETF (CNEW) which was up 3.5%. More of this along with inflows is in their report. Articles - Global Financial Times - ETF inflows shoot past 2020’s full-year record total - This article shows that globally, to the month end of August, 2021 has already seen more money flow into ETFs than in all 2021. That's a total of USD $9.7 trillion thanks to $834.2 billion coming into the ETF markets to this year. It goes into the abandonment of active manager opposition to ETFs and the increase in closed ended funds now converting to active listings. Yahoo FinaArk Invest Fund to Allow Participation in Canadian Bitcoin ETF - Very short article but basically, a new SEC filing shows the innovative ARK Invest is going to launch an ETF with exposure to the Canadian bitcoin ETFs that are out in the market. That's certainly one way to get into bitcoin ETFs. Financial Times - Crypto ETF assets treble as investors take risks - $9 trillion in ETFs globally is mostly plain vanilla funds but cryptocurrency ETFs are on the rise along with risky ETFs such as the various leverages ETFs. It talks about how the SEC has approved leveraged products but a consortium of ETF issuers (controlling 90% of the US ETF market) want these assets stripped of their ETF designation. Videos Starting things off with a few videos that missed last week's Thursday night cut-off and with the first one being a video we're involved in which is always fun. ausbiz - ETF funds continue to build driven in part by ESG investors - 10th September - This is one featuring the latest ETFtracker analysis and data for August. We highlighted what happened in the month with performance and flows and also highlighted some of our new ETF holdings analysis. 8mins ausbiz - Why ETFs thrived in 2021 - 9th September - Priscilla Luke from S&P Dow Jones Indices joins ausbiz to digest the results from the 2021 mid-year SPIVA Australia report. 5mins Back to what's happened over the this week and we start off with The Compound. From ETF flows in 2021 (and Vanguard / iShares being the biggest) to the flows of mutual funds versus ETFs. For both of these charts see the chart/s of the week section below. They go into the size of ETF holdings as well (top 10% of Nasdaq 100 is 50% of the whole fund) and more about what's driven growth. A very ETF centric show this time around so well worth the 41mins for this one. ausbiz - Why adding an ETF to your portfolio is a golden idea - In this episode its all about gold and whether to get into it via an ETF or the real thing. Kanish Chugh makes the case on this episode. 5mins ausbiz - The Australian ETF industry shatters another huge milestone - 14th September - Alistair Mills from BetaShares breaks down the now $125 billion of FUM in the market as at the end of August. This is part 1 with episode 2 out next Sunday but its great to hear Shani and Mark go through a favourite topic of ours. Then they chat with Kanish Chugh from ETF Securities who just launched the SEMI ETF. Tweet of the week US Sector and Industry ETF performance from TrackInsight: https://twitter.com/TrackInsightETF/status/1436334356235276292 Chart(s) of the Week - ETF growth in 2021 2 charts today both from the same episode of The Compound. First up is this one showing not just the dominance of Vanguard and iShares but how much Vanguard flows in 2021 have outpaced even the record it set in 2021 and the iShares record of 2017. This next one is from the show again (and created by ETF stalwart Dave Nadig) and shows the projected trend of ETF vs mutual fund (MF) growth with the expectation that this current trajectory sees MFs being overtaken by 2026/27. What's interesting is not just the growth of ETFs but also the stagnation of mutual funds. This down/flat trend of mutual funds could get worse with more investors doing the self investment version of an SMSF here (over there its 401Ks and IRAs). Further ETF Education In this week of ETF educaiton we're highlighting the eInvest "How to invest in ETFs" page which features details on the differnet types of ETFs, benefits, risks and how to buy them. - Guide to the ETF Holdings Comparison Tool
Summary / TL;DR: This article shows the newest tool in the ETFtracker kit for those interested in analysing ETF holdings. The guide and videos refer to the app on its standalone Holdings page (here) but it is now part of the main ETFtracker app and the holdings page will be removed in the next week or so. The features as shown in the guide still work the same in the main ETFtracker app (here). Update 18th September 2021: We removed Fixed Income ETFs from the comparison due to the difficulty in matching up the various naming conventions for fixed income ETF holdings. Equity ETFs have different names as well but are easier to match up. This reduces coverage to ~150 from over 170. Update 16th September 2021: We filmed a video guide for this that's available on YouTube - you can check that out below. Background If you've followed along the ETFtracker journey, you'll know that our focus is to help people make better investment decisions with data. There's a lot of data out there but it's either behind expensive paywalls or is hard to access. In the hard to access arena, there are ones that are easy to get data for but they take time to put together so there is a bit of a barrier to entry. ETF holdings data is in that space and we've already gathered data from 6 of the major ETF issuers and created 6 separate holdings analysis tools that you can use to visually see and compare holdings data within those issuers. But, this was limited if you wanted to compare ETFs across issuers. The next part of the journey was to enable comparisons across these issuers and we're pleased to launch this feature now for others to try with our new ETF Holdings Comparison Tool. It's version 1.0 of this out in the wild and if the journey of the main ETFtracker is anything to go by, this will go through a number of iterations and improvements so we've just kept things simple for now with 2 areas accessible which we'll go through below. The ETF Holdings Comparison Tool The holdings tool has its own page which will be removed in a few weeks as all features are now in the main ETFtracker app here: https://www.etftracker.com.au/the-app Using the App This app is less visual than the others for now but it allows comparisons in 2 ways. The first is to compare ETFs and see how similar their holdings are. The second is to search for a particular holding and see which of the 170 ETFs we cover it has exposure to. The user can navigate to these with the side panel menu as shown below. When searching and comparing, we have a set of filters that pop out on the right hand side of each page. On the ETF comparisons tool we have included filters from the main ETFtracker app such as ETF Categories (as defined by ASX/Chi-X), thematics (defined by ETFtracker) and then you can either look up ETFs by their ticker or the fund name. In the example below, the user opens the filter, selects some providers and ETF categories and closes the page. The main table in the middle shows the ETFs you have selected with ETF tickers across the top and security tickers down the left hand side. The security tickers have a plus sign next to them because each of the issuers has different data providers and thus, their holdings files are all different. (we've had to do a lot of cleaning to make sure we can make these ETFs comparable). Below is an example showing the user expanding on the security tickers and you can see that some have multiple names of the securities. That's because different issuers have data providers but we clean up the ticker and join the data on that. Additionally, you can see a bar chart on the right of the table. This shows what the weight is of the top 10 holdings for the ETFs you have selected. On the next page we jump to the Search Holdings table and this is where you can search for certain stocks. In this example, the user brings up the filter, searches for the ticker TSLA and closes the filter so they can see which ETFs have TSLA (Tesla) in it. They then open the filter again and select KGN (Kogan) and HD (Home Depot). The list then shows those ETFs which have those particular holdings in them. The user can also search by name but as mentioned above, you will have different naming conventions across providers so searching by ticker is preferred. If you do search by name make sure you select multiple names of the stock. Where there are numbers along with the names, this usualyl depicts a corporate bond so be careful about choosing those if you were after the equity version only. You can notice this when looking at the ticker of a holding because some equities will be shown as say WBC (for Westpac's equity) and WBCAU or WBC with a number for the corporate bond. Another way is to look at what ETF comes up when you pick the security and if it is a bond ETF then it's more than likely just holding corporate and government bonds and the security you've picked is not an equity. We have also added some info (i) buttons around the page so hover over those for more info. Caveats Of course, this tool has some limitations so it's important to know what they are before you get caught out with anything. Weekly updates – at this early stage with further iterations being planned, we're keeping the updates on this to be weekly and on weekends. At some point in future we'll update the app daily but bea in mind that the holdings only rebalance on quarterly/half-yearly or similar frequencies. Common Tickers- Some ETF comparisons you pull up might have securities (another name for stocks/equities/other holdings) that have a common ticker name. The ticker is the 3 or 4 (sometimes more) alphabetical or numeric code that is the identifier for that security. Selections Required - Another caveat be mindful of is that due to the sheer size of this table, not all values are displayed so you need to actually make selections for this table to be useful. Think about your comparisons - Also, have a think about your selections. If you’re comparing 30 ETFs because you are actually considering having that many in a portfolio, you may want to think about how that could potentially be overly diversified (yes that’s a thing). Even if you did do that, you’re going to have a hard time seeing how comparable those ETFs are against each other unless you’ve got an ultrawide screen. You are better off searching and comparing in groups. Size does matter - The ETF holdings you have are going to be most impacted by the top weighted holdings so if you see that 3 of your ETFs have a similar holding but that holding is 0.9%, 1.2% , 0.5% of each ETF it is not going to make a huge difference. Bond, equity or other holding - Searching holdings is not divided up into bonds, equities and other instruments. You’ll need to either identify this by looking at the ETF that comes up from your search (if it’s a bond ETF then the security ticker you’ve selected is likely a corporate bond) or by the security ticker symbol. For example, Commonwealth Bank’s equity would be ticker symbol CBA but the bond for some providers is CBAAU or CBA with some other extra identifier to it like CBA2606A. It’s not clean but there are ways around it and luckily, the majority of ETFs are equity ones. Country filter with limits - We also have a country filter on this page but not all ETF Issuers provided the country of the security/holding. Others provided country names and others provided country codes. Those who provided country codes used different country code methodologies. We’ve had to do quite a bit of mapping work here. We suggest to only use the country filter if you are searching for non-Vanguard holdings. Beware of the exchange where the holding trades - For some ETFs, especially the Asian ones, they have holdings which have both regional listings as well as those trade in the US. For example, Taiwan Semiconductor trades as TSM on the New York Stock Exchange but is also trade on the Taiwan Stock Exchange as ticker 2330. Despite being the same company, these aare not the same stock. ETFs to be added - Some ETFs which hold other ETFs are not currently shown here whilst others are. For example, we do show DGGF, DHHF, DZZF from BetaShares which hold other ETFs but we don't yet bring in VDHG and other Vangaurd ETF of ETFs. The holdings data comes out differently so we still need to figure out how to handle those. So, what comes next? The next steps from here include further additions and integrations. Further additions would be in adding ETFs we don't list from other providers as well as some of the ETFs here we are missing. Of course, this is only where holdings are made available. Additionally, we'll be integrating this holdings data into the main ETFtracker app so that when the user looks at an ETF Snapshot page they will also get some holdings analysis too (where we have coverage). Furthermore to the ETF Snapshot addition, we'll also be adding a feature for ETF exposures where we'll showcase the holdings of the ETF you're looking at but also where those holdings have exposure to other ETFs across the ones that we cover.

- Exchange Traded Fridays - Issue 8 - 10th September 2021
Welcome to Issue 8 of Exchange Traded Fridays for the week ending 10th September 2021 and it's a big Friday for us we go on ausbiz later at 130pm today. We'll talk about the latest ETF statistics which came out from the ASX on Wednesday. Martin Dinh and team have been hard at work crunching the numbers and so have we. If you missed our previous newsletters you might not have seen the latest ausbiz updates which mean you can now follow your favourite experts so if you want to ETF updates from ETFtracker (and others) then sign up here: https://www.ausbiz.com.au/?rh_ref=markd1d0 Once you've joined you can go to my page and add me to your watchlist too: https://www.ausbiz.com.au/expert/mark-monfort?expertID=179 This week in local news the biggest piece was the latest market update and we crunch the numbers in an article on ETFtracker. We also take a look at the latest ETF from ETF Securities (SEMI) and more on what to look out for with ETFs from Morningstar. Globally, we saw news on Chinese crackdowns not dampening spirits for Asian ETF investments and more on bitcoin ETFs as well as direct indexing. Here's a summary of what else is in this newsletter. What's in this newsletter? Articles - Local Articles - Global Videos Podcasts Tweet of the week Chart of the week ETF Education ETFtracker App Updates ETFtracker Forum Listen or Watch Articles - Local ETFtracker Blog - ASX Market Update - August 2021 - In this article we highlight the latest numbers we've crunched from the ASX. At a high level, nearly $123 billion in FUM is in the market now, driven by $3.5 billion of net inflows and performance was mostly positive with an average of +2.2% across the board. We explore this with a new and improved ETFtracker app and some new ETF snapshots (looking at ATEC and VGS in this case). Below you can see an animation of the new landing page, high-level snapshots, menus and ETF snapshots too. Investor Daily - ETF boom to drive market cap $200bn - in this article it goes through some research from VanEck showing that market cap for ETFs is expected to reach $140 billion by the end of 2021 and that July was the biggest month of inflows on record for Aussie ETFS with $2.8 billion net inflows for that period. Their survey of investment manages showed that 89% of respondents would recommend ETFs to others as well. Investor Daily - Semiconductor ETF posts biggest 1st day in ASX history - ETF Securities launched their new ETF SEMI which tracks the Solactive Global Semiconductor 30 Index. It had $5m of flows on its first day which is the biggest first day of passive ETF in ASX history. Morningstar - ETFs are funds, not friends: Editor's Note - An article that came out Friday but important to highlight now especially as the trend for thematic ETFs continues amongst investors (millennials and otherwise). Emma Rappaport of Morningstar puts it well when she highlights that "when a new ETF is launched because it satisfies the latest trend or fad, ask yourself if that thematic has already substantially played out". This aligns with our belief at ETFtracker that it's important to look under the hood of any ETF no matter the name. Another piece that's interesting here is the highlighting of ticker names and how having memorable ones can help. She also highlights the Bloomberg article on the ticker grey market we flagged last week too (you can see that article here: Bloomberg - Hunt for Hottest Tickers Creates a New Gray Market on Wall Street The Australian - Alex Vynokur’s ETF provider Betashares hits $20bn milestone - in this Article, BetaShares founder Alex Vynokur highlights the growth of BetaShares ETFs from when they started in 2010 until now. As you can see from the chart below, up until the end of August, BetaShares FUM got up to $19.5 billion so they hit this milestone early this month. Congrats to them! ETF Securities Weekly Monitor - Week Ending 3rd September - per ETF Securities notes this week: "Japan funds (HJPN and IJP), Asia tech (ASIA), domestic resources ETFs (MVR, QRE and OZR) and domestic small-cap funds (VSO and ISO) led the market higher last week. Leveraged funds aside, the week’s biggest decliners included US small and mid-cap funds (IJR and IJH), China (CNEW), US dollar (USD) and global banks (BNKS)." Check out the link to this article for what else has done well. Articles - Global Bloomberg - Chinese Crackdown Discounts Lure Investors Into Emerging ETFs - the article highlights how US ETFs focused on investing in China and Hong Kong saw $1 billion of inflows last week and how this has helped emerging markets ETFs this could be due to investors buying the dip but it could also be better than expected macroeconomic data out of that part of the world. Bloomberg - A Bitcoin ETF Is Likely Coming Soon. Is It Better to Just Buy Bitcoin? - Bull and Bear cases for a bitcoin ETF with some interesting points raised as investors who want bitcoin can just open up an app and buy it. That said, there are pros for having a bitcoin type ETF that can open up the world of institutional investing to cryptocurrencies. More of this back and forth in that article. Yahoo Finance - Is Invesco Dynamic Semiconductors ETF (PSI) a Strong ETF Right Now? - Quick but interesting article as we saw an Australian listed semiconductor play with ETF Securities SEMI. In this article it goes through this Invesco semiconductor play which is non-cap weighted and stocks are picked based on other criteria such as fundamentals. More details about the ETF and even alternatives are shown in the article. Financial Times - Morningstar joins race to provide direct indexing services - with this week's purchase of Moorgate Benchmarks by Morningstar, it marks a move into the world of direct indexing for the firm. As explained in the article, the concept of direct investing allows investors to create bespoke portfolios on investment factors or other parameters like ESG. It's been a niche service but is growing in size with the world leader in this space, Eaton Vance, acquired by Moran Stanley and BlackRock buying industry number 2 Aperio last year. Videos ausbiz - Everything ETF: Look under the hood & D-Y-O-R - 8th September - Kanish Chugh talks about the ETF Securities ASX 300 Yield ETF (ZYAU) and its strong performance driven by the reopening trade and more. A need to understand exposure is key as well as looking under the hood. 8mins ausbiz - Everything ETF: is sustainable investing becoming just plain investing? - In this episode its all about ESG with Alex Holmes from BetaShares chatting about the subjectivity of ESG investing and what to look out for. Alex say to look for companies who are deriving earnings from sustainable and green investment revenues. 6mins ausbiz - What ASX reports taught credit investors - 3rd September - in this video whilst it missed last week's cut-off it's important for any credit investors. Brad from eInvest highlights that they're seeing positivity in the Australian corporate balance sheets across multiple industries as well as what signals they look for from companies. 5mins The Compound - Interest Rates Are Never Going Up Again | Animal Spirits 221 - We usually highlight The Compound and Friends show rather than Animal Spirits but both shows are awesome. They talk about Ray Dalio's performance, a bit on bitcoin and one of the host's (Ben Carlson) battle with Covid. They also highlighted how its interesting seeing the talk of these current markets being in a bubble when previous markets took a while to run up and recover (years compared to this current one). Perspective might make us less bearish there. 38mins Podcasts Shares for Beginners - Kenny Polcari - The Global Financial Crisis - In this week's episode, Phil Muscatello chats with our good friend Kenny Polcari in the 4th and final part of his history of the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange). Kenny walks through how the NYSE handled the GFC and if you missed previous episodes you can catch up here: Episode 3 - Remembering 9/11 with Kenny Polcari Episode 2 - A Brief History of the NYSE Pt II 1987 – 2000 Episode 1 - A Brief History of the NYSE Pt I 1980 - 1987 Let's talk ETFs - 3rd September - Missed last week's cutoff by a day so it makes it in this week and it's on an important topic of ESG. In this Let's Talk ETFs podcast, Seeking Alpha speaks with Stephan Flagel, Chief Product Officer of Qontigo.to discuss how the ESG space is affecting exchange traded funds. Tweet of the week We got to fly the Aussie flag with this tweet from Nate Geraci from The ETF Store as he asked his followers about the best ticker they can think of. Whilst there are plenty of great ones here - we hope you liked our reply. https://twitter.com/NateGeraci/status/1435045579936174091 Chart of the Week - New ETF Snapshots in ETFtracker This week it's all about the latest ETF market snapshots which give users an ability to quickly see what's going on across 6 key areas of an ETF. - Latest ETF market update for August 2021
With the latest ASX data out on Wednesday it's time to look at what's happened in the ETF markets. We can now do this with our latest ETFtracker app where we have a new landing page, ETF snapshots and other features in the mix. Here's an example of a user navigating the app to explore more: What happened overall The market grew to just under $123 billion and added 3 new ETFs (SEMI from ETF Securities, MHHT from Magellan and GCAP from VanEck) taking the total nubmer to 240. The screen below shows the number of ETFs dip in August (against growing FUM) but that's because we only have data from ASX with Chi-X due out in a few days. We can also see that average returns were +2.24% and this is up on the previous month (all the triangles in the KPI section below show whether the metric is higher or lower than the previous month). The growth in FUM was driven by $3.5 billkion of inflows and 479k trades occurred in August (a trend up but still below the record 770k set in March 2020). Who performed best and worst Going deeper, we can see that top performers for August were ATEC (BetaShares Australian Technology ETF) at +14% followed by ETF Securities Long Nasdaq leveraged ETF (LNAS) and BetaShares robotics ETF (RBTZ) as well as Indian ETF plays NDIA/IIND coming in after them. Worst performers in August were the leveraged bearish plays but as we mentioned, the market was mostly up. Where did the money go? We can see that the new Magellan listing of MHHT had the most inflows at $1 billion, followed by VGS, VAS and HYGG. What got traded the most In terms of trades, the most went to the Vanguard ASX 300 play (VAS) followed by NDQ, VGs and IOZ with ETHI not far behind. What's in the ETF Snapshots Looking at the newest ETF Snapshots feature we can doa quick analysis of some of the interesting ETFs for August. Starting off with ATEC which had the best returns. Navigating to the ETF Snapshot page and using the dropdown to select ATEC, we can see that its returns profile is going from strength to strength. This is despite little in terms of inflows going to it for the month. Transactions wise, it's still trading steadily with latest data showing 1.6k trades in the month of August with a value of $15 million traded (an average parcel size of just under $10k). We can also see its bid ask spread has been decreasing showing its getting easier and easier to trade this ETF and its historical distribution yield was higher in July and August. Another ETF we can look at is VGS (Vanguard MSCI International Shjares ETF) which had strong inflows in August (amongst the top 3 ETFs). This one has been out longer than ATEC and we have data going back to 2017. It's seeing strong returns over that time and has had its biggest amount of net inflwos in the last 2 months along with strongly trending transactions. Now this ETF can be bought on its own but also sits within other Vanguard ETFs (like VDHG, VDGR, VDCO, VDBA) so popularity of those can also contribute towards VGS (kind of like preference voting). It's bid ask spread has been improving but distribution yield is on the decline. It's got a lower MER than many other ETFs and that's been flat across the period we've got data for it. If you're interested in exploring other ETF snapshots or other data in this app you can do so here: https://www.etftracker.com.au/the-app We also do ETF holdings analysis where you can compare ETFs to check for holdings similarity or search for particular holdings to see which ETFs they have exposure to. Check out those apps here: https://www.etftracker.com.au/holdings
- Exchange Traded Fridays - Issue 7 - 3rd September 2021
Welcome to Issue 7 of Exchange Traded Fridays for the week ending 3rd September 2021. This week in local news we saw ESG funds top the lilst of flows from last week and some helpful insights on what to look for in an ESG fund from VanEck. Globally, there was an interesting article that is actually from last week (but it missed our Thursday cut-off) which was all about the grey market for ticker symbols and how that plays a role in marketing an ETF. We mentioned this last week but make sure you follow us on ausbiz and sign up to that financial news platform if you have not already. - App updates
Hi all, Been a while since we've blogged and the community has certainly grown thanks to everyone sharing and liking and contributing their ideas. If you weren't already aware, we launched a podcast and YouTube set of videos to go along with the weekly newsletter (now in its 7th week). If you subscribe you can get access to all that for free! Holdings Analysis Apps Anyway, speaking of app updates, I've been working with a former colleague/friend (Tim Rosser) on some new features including the addition of new ETF holdings apps. We used to cover just 3 of the major providers (BetaShares, iShares and State Street) but we now do Vanguard, ETF Securities and VanEck thanks to help from Tim. You can check them out here: https://www.etftracker.com.au/holdings Below you can see how the user can navigate to search for particular holdings and see what ETFs they're in or compare ETFs to see how similar their holdings are. Comparing ETFs Searching for holdings ETFtracker app Additionally, we are updating the main ETFtracker app to make it easier to analyse and understand what is going on with a particular ETF (at least from a data-driven perspective). Here's an example showing the new easier to use menu as well as the Single ETF analysis page which gives a nice snapshot of the ETF. From this data we can see how returns have performed historically whether the ETF is growing in size what it's transactions have looked like how well it trades the strength of its distributions and costs Coupling this with links directly to each funds website and links to Google Finance pages for these ETFs (for up to date market prices) and this is a powerful single stop resource for Aussie ETF investors. We're also working on a new landing page to directly go to where you want and more. Still a work in progress so below is what it might look like (don't hold us to this haha). Will be out in a few weeks!

ETFtracker App Updates (and holdings app updates) We've made some strides this week with new features to the ETFtracker which will go out in the next couple of weeks. The first is that we've added to the ETF holdings analysis tools with ETF Securities now being added to the mix. We cover 12 of the 17 funds they have (the other 5 are metals ETFs which hold gold or silver so we've not included those). Eventually we will also add Vanguard and VanEck coverage and then we begin the task of bringging all of the above into a single app. Additionally, we've listened to our audience who wanted the main ETFtracker app to be easier to navigate - we're working on a few features to make it easier to analyse single ETFs as well as a new landing page so we'll talk more about that in time. - Much needed website overhaul (thanks to some help)
Less of an ETF market update and more of an ETFtracker specific update here. Specifically we're talking about our website and some recent improvements that visitors and subscribers may have noticed. Over the last few weeks, along with an update to the year-old ETFtrracker app, we also added some new website features like the Forum and Podcast. The problem with all of this was that we just added elements to the website bit by bit but hadn't really looked at bringing them into a cohesive unit. Below you can see what the website looked like before. You can't tell where the podcast is because it's hidden behind the Insights menu as a dropdown along with the Blog. The Guide was a section on its own but in review, it made more sense being included in the Apps section as a dropdown option. The worst part was the inability of the images to homepage images to scale which meant this page looks okay on laptop screens but on widescreens like below, things look stretched out. To fix this we looked for and found an expert. Enter Michael Diedricks, a web developer who we brought in to undertake a website review. Thanks to his work we were able to do things like create a more logical menu and fix up the background images to scale. Here's the latest website now. Now all app related items sit under the 1 menu and we've consolidated the apps as well with all holdings analysis tools on one page and all of the guides also on one page and make use of navigation buttons to move around on the page as well as arrows to guide a user back to the top of the page. We fixed up other things like the fonts on the pages to have a more consistent style and size and we also created a feature section on the homepage to showcase some of the important features in the app. It took a bit of work but was worthwhile getting there so we just wanted to give Michael the shout out here and if anyone is after improving their website please feel free to contact him at the following links: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mdiedricks/ Email: michael.diedricks@gmail.com
